Complete shutdown observed in Handwara

Srinagar, January 25, 2019 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, complete shutdown was observed, today, in north Kashmir’s Handwara town against the massacre of civilians by the Border Security Forces (BSF) personnel on this day in 1990. The shutdown call was given by the Joint Resistance Leadership comprising Syed Ali Gilani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik to remember civilians killed after BSF personnel opened fire on demonstrators on January 25, 1990.

All shops and other business establishments remained closed while public transport was off the roads. An eyewitness said that police and paramilitary forces were deployed in the town to prevent any protest in the town. Meanwhile, Hurriyat leaders paid glowing tributes to the martyrs of Handwara on their martyrdom anniversary. Seventeen innocent Kashmiris were killed when Indian paramilitary Border Security Force (BSF) personnel had opened indiscriminate fire on peaceful demonstrators in the town on this day in 1990.

Hurriyat leader, Imtiyaz Ahmad Reshi in a statement issued in Srinagar, paying glowing tributes to the martyrs of Handwara, said that the unprecedented sacrifices of Kashmiri people would definitely bring fruit. He said the sacrifices of Kashmiri martyrs have raised the Kashmir dispute at international level and their mission would be taken to its logical conclusion despite all odds. The Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Salvation Movement (JKSM), Zafar Akber Butt in his statement in Srinagar paid rich tributes to the martyrs of Handwara massacre. He said the people of Kashmir would always remember the sacrifices of martyrs and would continue their struggle.
