The National Disability and Development Forum (NDF) Pakistan, in collaboration with the CIP Chapter Matiari and supported by TDEA Islamabad, organized a Provincial Conference on Disability.
The event emphasized the importance of disability inclusion, particularly in political and electoral processes, ensuring equal participation for persons with disabilities (PWDs) across all spheres of life, according to a statement issued today. Prominent speakers and dignitaries participated in the conference, including Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, Minister for Planning and Development and Energy Department Government of Sindh. He highlighted the critical need for the inclusion of PWDs in political structures, suggesting the establishment of disability wings in political parties.
Shah assured the audience of his commitment to enhancing accessibility and inclusion for PWDs across Sindh and commended the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPD) for its continued efforts.
Shaheena Sher Ali, Minister for Women Development, extended her support to women with disabilities and voiced strong opposition to body shaming. She stressed the importance of creating safe and inclusive environments where women with disabilities can thrive.
Iqbal Detho, Chairman of the Sindh Human Rights Commission (SHRC), urged collaboration between disability organizations and the Sindh government to address issues outlined in the United Nations’ recommendations and list of issues on disability rights.
Abid Lashari, President of NDF Pakistan, emphasized the need for equal treatment of persons with disabilities and their inclusion in decision-making processes at all levels. He called for sustained efforts to ensure their rights are safeguarded and respected.
Farman Tanwari and Ratna Dewan, representatives of the DEPD, shared key initiatives undertaken by the department to improve the lives of PWDs in Sindh, reaffirming the government’s commitment to disability empowerment. DC Matiari Muhammad Yousif Shaikh highlighted to support persons with disabilities under The District Friendship Board, Matiari in terms of loans for Business and finicial assistance.
The conference concluded with a shared resolve to continue advocating for the rights of persons with disabilities, focusing on their inclusion in political, social, and economic decision-making. The event underscored the collective responsibility of government bodies, civil society, and individuals to create an equitable and inclusive society.
