Continued illegal detention of Masarrat Aalam denounced

Srinagar, December 21, 2018 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, the Jammu and Kashmir Muslim League (JKML) has strongly denounced the continued illegal detention of its Chairman, Masarrat Aalam Butt. The JKML spokesman, Sajjad Ayubi, in a statement in Srinagar said that Masarrat Aalam Butt was brought to Srinagar from Heeranagar Jail in Jammu by Indian police and produced before the court of Additional District and Session Judge, Srinagar, in a false case registered against him at Nowhatta Police Station. He said that the court fixed the next hearing of the case on January 21 next year. He said that after the hearing, the JKML Chairman was shifted back to Heeranagar Jail.

The spokesman said that Masarrat Aalam was languishing in jail since long, however, it was quite disheartening that he was being subjected to vengeance by occupation authorities. He said the authorities have decided to keep the JKML Chief behind the bars and they are using draconian Public Safety Act (PSA) as a tool otherwise courts have repeatedly quashed his detention and directed his release but the authorities are adamant on placing him in far off jails.

Sajjad Ayubi said that putting Masarrat Aalam Butt in jails on concocted charges and slapping PSA repeatedly on him to prolong his illegal detention was nothing but travesty of justice and democracy. “A conspiracy is being hatched to keep Aalam under detention. The authorities don’t want to free him. There is no justification to keep him behind the bars. New ways and means are being devised to harass and intimidate him but he will never succumb,” he maintained.

The JKML appealed to the UN, OIC, International Committee of Red Cross, Amnesty International and other human rights bodies to take cognizance of illegal detention of Masarrat Aalam Butt under PSA and play role in his early release.
