Cotton production estimated 10 million tonnes this year: Cheema

Islamabad, October 08, 2021 (PPI-OT):Special Assistant on National Food Security Jamshed Iqbal Cheema has expressed the government’s commitment to enhance agriculture productivity in order to check inflation. Addressing a news conference in Islamabad on Friday, he said the country is likely to produce ten million bales of cotton this year as compared to previous year’s six million bales. He said this is a revival in cotton production.

As regards rice, he said it will touch the mark of ten million tonnes this year. The Special Assistant said we will not need to import sugar next year as a result of better crop of sugarcane. He said that the price of sugar will be fixed at about eighty rupees per kilogram next year because of increased local production.

Jamshed Iqbal Cheema said the wheat target has been set at thirty million tonne. The Special Assistant said efforts are also afoot to provide support to the farmers. He said we are providing subsidized seeds to one million farmers. He said a subsidy of twenty billion rupees will be given this year to the farmers on Phosphatic fertilizers.
