(COURT): Court sends underage newlywed girl to Larkana shelter home

KARACHI:The Sindh High Court on Wednesday sent an underage girl, who got married, to Larkana’s Shelter Home after documents revealed that she was only 14 years old.

Fozia, a 14-year-old girl, who was married to her school teacher, Noor Nabi, a few months ago, approached the court seeking protection from her parents family who has been threatening her for making a freewill marriage.

The court said that the Sindh Child Marriage Restraint Act 2013 prohibits the marriage of anyone under the age of 18. It penalizes the person who arranges the marriage and the parents or guardians of the couple. The document of the girl revealed that she is only 14-year-old so the court does not allow her to return with husband who violated the law. The girl’s family members also reached the court.

The court asked the teenager either she will go with her parents or if she wants to move to a shelter home. The judges assured her that she would be safe if she wanted to be with her parents. She chose to stay at the Darul Aman. “I don’t want to be with my parents,” she said.
