(Court): SHC seeks replies on plea against unregistered blood banks

Karachi: Sindh High Court (SHC) on Wednesday sought replies from Sindh government and its health department o a petition filed against unregistered and substandard blood banks in the surroundings of government hospitals.

A SHC bench heard the petition filed by a citizen Mehmood Akhtar Naqvi against unregistered and substandard blood banks set up around the government hospitals. Additional Advocate General (AAG) appeared before the court and sought some time for submitting the reply.

The petitioner stated that unregistered blood banks have been selling substandard blood in the areas of Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center (JPMC), Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK) and Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH). He said that those blood banks had substandard testing kits. “Common technicians are working there instead of pathologists,” he said.

The petitioner also claimed that Blood Transfusion Authority was not taking steps to force the blood banks to use standard testing kits. The court asked the Sindh government and health department to submit replies in this regard. The court adjourned the hearing till 8th October.
