A meeting chaired by Sindh Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani addressed the growing issue of unsafe and unauthorized constructions across the province. Five buildings have been evacuated, with four in Garden and one in Saddar awaiting court approval. Over 300 families, including tenants, leaseholders, and property owners, have been displaced after the evacuation of 56 dangerous buildings.
A re-evaluation of 740 buildings across the province is to be completed within a week. This assessment will address concerns about 588 buildings in Karachi, primarily located in District South. An assessment team comprising members from SBCA, Deputy Commissioner, Pakistan Engineering Council, Pakistan Council of Architects and Town Planners, and ABAD has been tasked with conducting a comprehensive and immediate review.
Utility connections will be denied to constructions without completion certificates, and legal action will be taken against violating institutions. Leasing properties without completion certificates is now prohibited. Re-survey results of all dangerous buildings are to be submitted to the committee immediately.
SBCA will initiate the demolition of illegal constructions, utilizing external resources. A public awareness campaign about dangerous buildings will be launched across media platforms, including a portal for public reporting.
A committee headed by DG SBCA, including private sector engineers and lawyers, is finalizing amendments to the Sindh Building Control Authority Act. Monthly rent for displaced residents has been increased to 30,000 rupees for the initial three months, with instructions for immediate disbursement. ABAD and other institutions will explore rehabilitation solutions for long-term resettlement. SBCA will also partner with engineering universities for building assessments throughout Sindh.
