In a significant milestone for Pakistan’s economic development under CPEC Phase 2.0, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah today announced the establishment of the Dhabeji Special Economic Zone (SEZ), which is expected to attract an investment of $3 billion and create over 100,000 jobs.
According to statement by Sindh Chief Minister House, this project is being developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model by the Government of Sindh. At the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing ceremony, CM Murad Ali Shah described the agreement as a landmark achievement that will enhance industrial cooperation between Pakistan and China.
The agreement was signed by Abdul Azeem Uqaili, CEO of SEZMC; Mohabat Khan, CEO and Chairman of Zahir Khan Brothers (ZKB); and Cheng Qiang of PowerChina International, with the support of China’s National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC).
The Dhabeji SEZ, strategically located near Karachi’s ports, offers exceptional connectivity and access to regional trade routes, positioning it as the most viable economic zone under CPEC. The CM emphasised the zone’s potential to attract both domestic and foreign investment, particularly from Chinese companies looking to expand their operations in South Asia.
‘The Dhabeji SEZ is set to transform Pakistan’s economic landscape,’ Shah said. He added that the project would stimulate industrial growth, reduce reliance on imports, and boost exports, leading to a self-reliant and sustainable economy.
Syed Qassim Naveed Qamar, the Special Assistant to CM Sindh on Investment, highlighted the zone’s potential to promote value-added industries, empower local communities, and provide skills development opportunities. ‘This SEZ will have a transformative social and economic impact on the region, creating over 100,000 direct and indirect jobs and uplifting local communities,’ he said.
The MoU signing was witnessed by members of the Sindh Cabinet, senior officials, and dignitaries. This initiative underscores Pakistan’s commitment to enhancing industrial cooperation under CPEC and promoting sustainable development. The Dhabeji SEZ is anticipated to attract considerable investment, drive regional trade, and reinforce Pakistan’s position as a key player in South Asia’s economic landscape.
