Islamabad, July 10, 2019 (PPI-OT): Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Health Dr. Zafar Mirza received 30,000 doses of injections to treat Leishminiasis, a skin disease with cases in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, from WHO Representative in Pakistan Dr. Palitha Mahipala. A ceremony in this regard was held at the Ministry of National Health Services, Islamabad.
Speaking to the media on the occasion, Dr. Zafar Mirza said the issue of Leishminiasis cases was highlighted in a meeting of the National Health Task Force and he was asked to take measures for control of the disease that has afflicted people in certain districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Baluchistan and parts of Punjab.
I had convened an urgent meeting in this context and it was agreed that in view of the shortage of injections to treat the disease, in the short term, support will be sought from WHO for supply of injections to treat the patients. On our request WHO Representative Dr. Palitha Mahipala is today handing over 30,000 doses of injections to treat Leishminiasis patients. SAPM on Health expressed gratitude to the WHO and said in the longer term we are encouraging local industry to produce the injections to meet the national demand.
