In a significant move towards boosting regional energy security and integration, Pakistan and Tajikistan have pledged to expedite the operationalization of the Central Asia South Asia Electricity Transmission and Trade Project (CASA-1000). This commitment was the highlight of the two-day 6th session of Bilateral Political Consultations held in Dushanbe.
The meeting, which saw Pakistan represented by Additional Foreign Secretary Syed Ali Asad Gillani and Tajikistan by Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs Farrukh Sharifzoda, focused on various bilateral and regional issues. Both parties reaffirmed the importance of establishing regional transport corridors to enhance connectivity and trade.
Discussions covered a broad spectrum of topics, including political and parliamentary relations, trade and investment, and defence and security. The dialogue also touched upon energy collaboration, cultural exchanges, and consular affairs. The positive trend in bilateral relationships was noted, with both nations emphasizing the importance of high-level visits to further their partnership.
In a bid to boost economic ties, both sides explored potential collaborations in sectors such as textiles, logistics, agriculture, food, and pharmaceuticals. Defence and security cooperation was also on the agenda, with talks on counter-terrorism strategies and training initiatives.
The two countries exchanged views on key regional and international issues, highlighting the situation in South Asia and Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir. They underscored the importance of diplomacy and the principles of the UN Charter in conflict resolution.
The consultations concluded with a mutual agreement to convene the next session of bilateral political consultations in Islamabad in the coming year. During his visit, the Pakistani Additional Secretary met with various Tajik officials and visited key economic zones and customs facilities.
