Brussels The European Union will provide 6 million euros ($6.7 million) in humanitarian assistance to Libya in 2019, bringing the total amount the bloc has allocated toward the country over the past year to 15 million euros.
“As many Libyans continued to be displaced within their country due to conflict, the Commission has announced today 6 million in humanitarian aid for 2019,” the European Commission said in a statement on Wednesday.
The EU is actively assisting Libya, which has been going through a political crisis since 2011. The bloc is currently implementing 23 projects, worth 70 million euros, aimed at boosting health, socioeconomic and civil society development in the North African country. It has also mobilized 318 million euros to protect migrants and refugees residing there.
“The EU stands by the Libyan people who have suffered years of conflict and instability,” EU Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides said in the statement.
“Our new humanitarian assistance will provide access to food, clean water, education in emergencies and basic health care for Libyans most in need. It is paramount that all parties to the conflict adhere to International Humanitarian Law and allow humanitarian organizations to do their lifesaving job,” he added.
The new portion of aid will also be poured into humanitarian projects aimed at providing psychological support to Libyans.
