EU, UN welcome Sarraj’s proposal to resolve Libyan crisis

The European Union and the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) welcomed the initiative of Head of the Presidential Council of Libya's Government of National Accord (GNA) Fayez Al-Sarraj to resolve the Libyan crisis.

"The European Union has always been supportive of any constructive proposal to bring forward the political process in Libya, under the aegis of the United Nations, and bring an end to conflict and division," the EU spokesperson said in a statement on Sunday.

"The proposal made today by the Libyan Prime Minister Fayez Mustafa Al-Serraj is certainly a step in that direction. The EU will continue to support the people of Libya and the UN in their determination to build lasting peace, stability and prosperity," the spokesperson added.

For its part, UNSMIL described the initiative announced by Al-Sarraj on Sunday as "a constructive proposal to advance the political process towards ending Libya's long state of conflict".

"UNSMIL welcomes the initiative, and any other initiative proposed by any of Libya's major actors and offers its good offices to assist the country to emerge from its long state of transition towards a period of peace, stability and prosperity," the Mission said in a statement published on its website.
