Expert sees many loopholes in policy to increase exports

LAHORE: Carpet Training Institute (CTI) and former President Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry Pervez Hanif Sunday said that there are many loopholes in the government’s policy to increase exports.

Talking to a delegation of carpet manufacturers and exporters in his office, Pervez Hanif said due to a lack of research and study, markets in many countries are still out of our sight and access to them for progress in Pakistan is inevitable.

He said to promote exports in Pakistan banking channel should be promoted with other countries including China. “Overseas embassies can play an extraordinary role in promoting, marketing and exporting Pakistani products, but unfortunately no formal policy is set for them,” he added. He said that China could be a major market for the export of Pakistan’s hand-made carpets so attention should be paid to this.

“There is a difference between exports of handmade carpets and other products. Handmade carpets are a product for which we have to attract people from other countries through our quality and design, so it is important to have a display,” he added. He said these companies should set up separate pavilions on their websites and get pavilions for it at airports abroad and also in big malls.

Hanif said that the dramatic decline in exports of handmade carpets in the last 6 to 7 years is a matter of concern and therefore the government is required to address the problems of this industry so that Pakistan’s unique identity in the world can be maintained.
