Federal Minister for Energy inaugurates Advanced Metering Infrastructure Cell, Paving the Way for Consumer-Friendly Power Sector Transformation

Faisalabad, June 07, 2023 (PPI-OT): Federal Minister for Energy Engr. Khurram Dastagir Khan has said that the power sector is being made consumer-friendly through implementation of the state-of-the-art technology of Advance Metering Infrastructure (AMI). He expressed these views while addressing an inauguration ceremony of the newly established Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Cell at Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO) Computer Centre here today. The ceremony was also attended by chairman FESCO Board of Directors (BODs) Malik Tahseen Awan, chairman GEPCO BOD Shoaib Butt, CEO FESCO Engr Bashir Ahmed, General Manager (Operation) Rana Ayub, BOD members and FESCO officers.

Engr. Khurram Dastagir said that the implementation of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) will enable FESCO and its consumers simultaneously access to real-time monitoring of meter data which would not only help to control the electricity theft and technical losses, but also helpful to eliminate over-billing. The Federal Minister said that the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) would be helpful in the fault tracing and immediate restoration of power supply in case of power failure.

Due to the real-time provision of complete information regarding the usage of electricity on smart mobiles and computers of the consumer, there will be an end to the wastage of electricity due to the effective control of the consumer's electricity usage times and bills. During the briefing Chief Executive Officer FESCO Engr. Bashir Ahmed and DG (IT) Abdul Hayee told that FESCO is replacing all industrial and agricultural electricity meters phase wise with its own resources to provide better service to its consumers and more than 6,000 consumers have been shifted to this technology.

He said that the establishment of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Section at FESCO Computer Center Faisalabad would escalate and improve performance of the project and all functions related to Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) will be possible under the one roof. Meanwhile, CEO FESCO briefed the Federal Minister Khurram Dastagir about the FESCO performance and said that there is no single power transformer overload of FESCO jurisdiction. He further said that with the construction of 500 KV Faisalabad west and 220 KV Lalian grid stations by NTDC, due to improvement in network and reduction in losses, FESCO has benefited more than one billion in a short period of eight months.

He said that there is no shortage of new meters in FESCO, recently 60,000 defective meters have been replaced and new meters are being installed within 15 days on application for new meters. FESCO is spending billions of rupees annually to improve its distribution system and 9 grid stations are being constructed across the region with an estimated cost of 3890 million, he added.

Federal Minister Khurram Dastagir appreciated the performance of the FESCO and congratulated Chief Executive Engineer Bashir Ahmad and other officers and said that FESCO's performance is worthy of imitation by other distribution companies. Special Adviser to Prime Minister on Finance Rana Ehsan Afzal, Board Directors Humair Hayat Rokhri, Noman Khalid, Ali Ranjha, Raja Ameer Hamza, Babar Ikram, Malik Rab Nawaz, Mian Farrukh Iqbal and a large number of FESCO officers were also present at this occasion.
