Acting President of Pakistan, Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, has underscored the critical importance of a free and independent press, declaring it the “true beauty of democracy” while extending congratulations to the new leadership of the Parliamentary Reporters Association of Pakistan (PRAP).

In a formal message on Friday, the Acting President felicitated the recently elected officials, including President M.B. Soomro, Vice President Muhammad Usman Khan Kakar, and Secretary Naveed Akbar. The well wishes were also extended to Joint Secretary Aurangzeb Kakar, Finance Secretary Shakir Abbasi, Information Secretary Javed Hussain, and the new governing body members.

Gilani lauded the smooth and peaceful conduct of the association’s elections, describing the process as a strong reflection of democratic values and unity within the parliamentary press corps. He noted that the confidence members placed in the new body was a testament to their credibility.

Highlighting the vital function of journalists covering the legislature, the Acting President remarked that the press gallery is an integral part of parliament. He emphasized that parliamentary reporters serve as a crucial link between lawmakers and the public, illuminating legislative processes and public interest matters to strengthen transparency, accountability, and the rule of law.

Reaffirming the Senate Secretariat’s commitment, Gilani recalled the traditionally cordial relationship between the Upper House and PRAP. He assured the new leadership that this cooperation would continue to strengthen in the future.

The Acting President expressed his hope that the new PRAP team would work with renewed dedication to address the challenges confronting parliamentary journalists and enhance their professional capacity. He concluded by wishing the elected body success, confident they would uphold the highest standards of integrity and democratic responsibility.
