Gawkadal martyrs remembered in IOK

Srinagar, January 19, 2018 (PPI-OT):In occupied Kashmir, the Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) has paid glowing tributes to the martyrs of Gaw Kadal ahead of their martyrdom anniversary. The DFP in a statement in Srinagar said Kashmir is a land of tragedies where Indian forces have committed massacres in every nook and corner of the territory. It said that more than 50 innocent people were killed in Gaw Kadal area of Srinagar on January 21, 1990 when Indian troops resorted to indiscriminate firing on peaceful demonstrators who were protesting against the molestation of several women by the troops on the previous night.

The party appealed the international human rights organizations to play role in conducting impartial investigation into all massacres in the territory to bring the perpetrators to book. In January 1990 only after the Gaw Kadal massacre, the Indian forces killed more than two hundred people in Kupwara and Islamabad districts proving the fact that New Delhi had adopted its killing policy in early nineties.

Meanwhile, a function was held in Srinagar to mark the martyrdom anniversary of Ghulam Nabi Mir, father of Hurriyat leader, Javaid Ahmed Mir, and the martyrs of Gaw Kadal.

Addressing the meeting, Javaid Mir said that the Indian troops during a night raid arrested his father, Ghulam Nabi Mir, in 1988 and took him along to notorious BSF Interrogation Centre Papa-II. He said that after 12 months at Papa-II, his father was shifted to Srinagar Central Jail where he suffered from paralysis. He said that his father was then shifted to Soura Institute of Medical Sciences where he passed away on the intervening night of 20th and 21st January, 1992.

Javaid Mir said that his father had devoted his entire life for the Kashmir cause. At the end of the function, special prayers were held for the Kashmiri martyrs, in general, and Ghulam Nabi Mir, in particular.
