Growers block highway against water scarcity

Naundero:The growers and poor tillers of Khan Wah, Adur Wah, Bhutto Wah, Jara Wah and Sarang Wah blocked Larkana-Sukkur Highway near Panjudero village, staged a sit-in and held a protest demonstration on Thursday against irrigation department Superintendent Engineer (SE) and Executive Engineer (XEN) for acute water scarcity in the above drains.

They belonged to Panju Dero, Wandh Ali Muhammad Kertio, Ramzan Chahwan, Bahman Plot, Adur Wah, Chambh Jeho, Allahando Jeho, Mangneja and other villages. They shouted slogans against the SE and XEN while holding dry paddy saplings in their hands.

Growers Iqbal Dayo, Ishaque Channo, Ibrahim Joto, Tarique Chajro, Maqsood Abro and others complained that XEN Ahmed Nawaz Chandio has opened the doors of the Naundero Regulator due to which those areas which are above the water level have become very dry and the agriculturists are unable to get proper water to sow paddy saplings for rice crop.

The growers said they had made several complaints to SE and XEN, but nothing had been done, hence, their saplings were burning due to water shortage. They alleged that Chandio was a very corrupt irrigation engineer who was demanding illegal gratification and after their refusal to pay him, he had opened the gates of the regulator which had deprived them of their water share. They said if they failed to sow rice now, then hundreds of poverty-stricken families in their areas would face hunger.

They demanded of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Sindh Chief Minister and Irrigation Minister to take notice of the issue, remove corrupt XEN and provide irrigation water so that they could be able to sow their saplings without loss of further time.
