(Health): Over 17,000 dog bite cases recorded in megalopolis

Karachi:Upto 17,000 dog bite cases have been recorded in three major hospitals of Karachi city from 1st January to 15 September 2020, PPI learnt Friday.

The Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) has registered a total of 6,500 dog-bite cases at Rabies Clinic. Similarly, Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK) has recorded 6,000 cases and nearly 5,000 cases were reported in Indus Hospital Karachi.

The stray dogs have become the most serious public health issue in the city as the population of stray dogs is increasing at an alarming rate in Karachi because there is nobody to get the people rid of them. If a person is bitten by a rabid dog and he or she is not vaccinated against rabies, there is no chance of its survival.

In Karachi, dog bite cases are being reported from slums areas of Ibrahim Hyderi, Korangi, Surjani, North Karachi, New Karachi, Baldia, Orangi, Keamari, Mehmoodabad, Liaquatabad, Federal B Area, Sohrab Goth, Orangi, Golimar and other areas. The children and elderly people generally become victims.
