(Health): Quackery on the rise in city’s suburban areas

Karachi:Score of quacks, non-technical paramedics and unskilled midwives are openly running private hospitals, medical or dental clinics and maternity homes throughout Karachi, especially in suburban area of the city due to poor monitoring system of Sindh Healthcare Commission (SHCC) and Sindh health department, it was learned on Sunday.

An official at Sindh Health Department told PPI that SHCC had failed devise a comprehensive strategy to control illegal practices of quacks operating in Karachi as old and suburban areas of the city had become hub of illegal dental or medical clinics and maternity homes.

He informed that hundreds of illegal hospital, dental clinics and maternity homes are operating across the city without check and balance. These dental and medical clinics and maternity homes are being run by non-qualify doctors, technicians and midwives. He said non-qualified people are not only spreading disease but also further increasing medical complications among the patients

He said city’s suburban areas, including New Karachi, Surjani Town, North Nazimabad, Bilal Colony, Ittehad Town, Baldia Town, Orangi Town, Korangi Town and Sohrab Goth, while old city areas of Karachi like Saddar, Lee Market, Lyari, Mauripur, Quaidabad, Landhi, Bin Qasim, Manghopir and Malir, has become hub of illegal dental and medical clinics and maternity homes.

Official said SHCC had launched drives against such elements in past on various occasion but unfortunately all campaigns could not produce desire results due to political pressure, poor planning and lack of coordination between SHCC and health department.
