Heavy wind-dust storm hits Karachi, Thar receives rain

KARACHI:Heavy wind-dust storm hit several areas of Karachi on Wednesday night, causing blackouts in various parts of the city. The wind-dust storm hit Malir, Korangi, Gizri, Defence, Clifton, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Saddar, Bahria Town, North Nazimabad, Safora Goth, Landhi and other areas. A light rain was also received in some parts of the city.

Met office reported today that Severe Cyclonic Storm (SCS) “NISARGA” moved further north-eastward with the speed of 20kmph during the last 06 hours and made landfall near south Gujarat-Maharashtra coast of India. Fishermen of Sindh have been warned to remain careful and stop sailing in the deep sea till 4 June due to rough sea conditions.

Earlier, the cyclonic storm ‘NISARGA’ over the east-central Arabian Sea after intensification into a Severe Cyclonic Storm (SCS) moved North-eastward during the past 12 hours and lay centered at 0800PST, the 3rd June near Latitude 17.6N and Longitude 72.4E, at a distance of about 970km southeast of Karachi.

Currently, none of Pakistan’s coastal area is under threat from this system. Meanwhile, various areas of the desert region of Thar on Wednesday evening received moderate to the heavy rain of the monsoon season. The areas of Chhachhro, Islamkot and Nagarparkar received rainfall with thunderstorms, bringing the smiles on the faces of Tharis, who totally depend upon the rain both for the crop cultivation and drinking water.

The reports said that after the rainwater accumulated in the shallow ponds locally called Tarais and residents told the media persons that they would get water for them and their livestock for the next few weeks. It was raining in various of three talukas when this story was filed.
