High Commissioner for Pakistan H.E. Babar Amin meets Australian Parliamentarians

Canberra, December 04, 2020 (PPI-OT): High Commissioner, H.E. Babar Amin held a series of meetings with various parliamentarians on the side-lines of ongoing session of Australian Parliament in Canberra. He met with Hon’ble Rowan Ramsey, Andrew Giles, and Milton Dick, the members of lower House of Representative of Australia, and the chair, vice chair and member of of Australia-Pakistan Parliamentary Friendship Group, respectively. The High Commissioner also met with Senator Janet Rice, and Senator Mahreen Faruqi from the Australian Greens.

During the meetings, the High Commissioner appreciated proactive role by the parliamentarians in formation of Australia-Pakistan Parliamentary Friendship Group and the importance of people to people contacts through frequent parliamentary exchanges. He emphasised that the people’s representatives from both countries have a unique role to play in promotion of bilateral relations in diverse avenues of cooperation.

The High Commissioner also exchanged views on bilateral and international issues of mutual interest and briefed the Hon’ble members about situation in South Asia and Kashmir. He also highlighted potential of cooperation in trade, investment, education, IT, and engineering sectors and invited Australian businessmen for investment in Pakistan.

The Members of Parliament sought to carry forward and build upon existing vibrant relations between Pakistan and Australia and expressed their desire for the visit of Australia-Pakistan Parliamentary Friendship Group to Pakistan once Covid-19 restrictions are lifted. They offered support in engaging Australian construction companies for investing in infrastructure projects in Pakistan and promoting educational cooperation through enrolment of more students coming from Pakistan to study in Australian universities.

The members of Parliament also expressed their intention to work closely in areas of trade facilitation including matters relating to tariff and non-tariff barriers, knowledge sharing, frequent high level exchanges, investment promotion, sports cooperation, and healthcare cooperation especially in the wake of pandemic and post Covid recovery.
