Hindus’ Raksha Bandhan rite celebrated in Umerkot with zeal

UMERKOT: Like other parts of the world, Hindus celebrated “Raksha Bandhan” rite in Umerkot with great zeal and tradition on Sunday.

Raksha Bandhan is an annual Hindu rite which is celebrated by Hindus across the world. On this day, sisters of all ages tie a red thread, called the rakhi, around the wrists of their brothers, symbolically protecting them, receiving a gift in return, and traditionally investing the brothers with a share of the responsibility of their potential care. This festivity is celebrated in August.

Umerkot city houses a population of 50% Hindus. All Hindus in the city celebrated this day in their houses as per tradition. There was a happy atmosphere in the houses as sisters tied red threads around the wrists of their brothers.

The sisters served sweets to the brothers and offered prayers for their well-being. The brothers also gave away gifts and money to their sisters. Various shopkeepers selling Rakhi, including Mama Maghan, Hotu, and Poonam Chand, said that this Rakhi is made of different colored threads and is beautiful.

Talking to PPI, Sindh’s renowned palmist and astrologer Bhagwan Das, Ustad Tekam Das, and Maharaj Dia Ram said that in Hindu religion, Raksha Bandhan festival is considered to be very sacred and has special significance for the affection of brothers and sisters.
