Inaugural Session of Pakistan-Denmark Bilateral Political Consultations held

Islamabad, March 06, 2018 (PPI-OT): The inaugural session of Pakistan-Denmark Bilateral Political Consultations was held in Copenhagen on 2 March 2018. The Pakistan delegation was led by Ambassador Zaheer A. Janjua, Additional secretary (Europe), while the Danish delegation was headed by Under Secretary for Global Politics and Security Ambassador Lisbet Zilmer-Johns.

The two sides reviewed the entire spectrum of bilateral relations and identified opportunities and possibilities for further strengthening cooperation, especially in the spheres of trade, economy, investment, agriculture, clean and renewable energy, waste and water management. The two sides expressed satisfaction at their ongoing cooperation at the multilateral fora, especially through mutual support of each other’s candidatures.

The two sides deliberated upon the evolving peace and security environments in their respective regions. The Danish side was apprised of the current situation in the South Asian region, especially Afghanistan, Pakistan-India relations and human rights violations in the Indian occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Ambassador Zilmer-Johns briefed on the situation in Denmark’s neighbourhood.

The Danish side acknowledged Pakistan’s contribution and sacrifices in the fight against terrorism. Denmark also reiterated strong support to Pakistan within the context of EU, especially on the GSP Plus scheme.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the two sides signed the MoU on Bilateral Political Consultation between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan and Denmark. Earlier, Additional Secretary (Europe) met Mr. Michael Jeppesen, Chief Adviser to the Prime Minister of Denmark and Mr. Kasper Hoeg-Jensen, Deputy Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Defence.

Pakistan considers Denmark an important country in the Nordic region and the European Union. The consultations provided a useful opportunity to take stock of the overall relations and discuss ways and means to further enhance cooperation in diverse spheres. It was decided that the 2nd round of BPC would be held in Islamabad at mutually convenient dates in 2019.
