Srinagar, March 10, 2019 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, the High Court Bar Association (HCBA) has condemned the summoning of the Hurriyat forum Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and the son of APHC Chairman, Syed Ali Gilani by the Indian National Investigation Agency (NIA) to its headquarters in New Delhi for questioning in connection with false cases registered against them.
The HCBA in its executive members’ meeting in Srinagar said, “Mirwaiz Umar Farooq besides being the Hurriyat forum Chairman is also the Mirwaiz of Kashmir, leads the Friday prayers in Srinagar Jamia Masjid and is held by the Muslims of Kashmir in high esteem. By summoning him, the National Investigating Agency is actually going to subject him to humiliation and intimidation, only because he is also spearheading the Kashmiris’ ongoing struggle for right to self-determination and demands peaceful solution of the Kashmir dispute, and in accordance with the aspirations of Kashmiri people.”
It said Naseem Gilani, who was summoned to New Delhi during 2017-18 a number of times in the fake case, has again been asked to appear before the NIA just to put pressure on Syed Ali Gilani and force him to succumb to the pressure tactics and accept the dictates of the Indian government to abandon the demand of settling the Kashmir dispute according to the UN Security Council resolutions.
By adopting such tactics, the HCBA meeting said, India and its agencies will not achieve anything, as this process is bound to further alienate the people of Kashmir and strengthen their belief of getting rid of the atrocities and brutalities by taking their struggle for right to self-determination to its logical end.
The participants of the meeting also expressed serious concern over the slapping of draconian Public Safety Act (PSA) on the JKLF Chairman, Muhammad Yasin Malik and Jamaat-e-Islami Chief Spokesman, Advocate Zahid Ali and others. They urged the international community to play effective role in getting them freed unconditionally, as their arrest and detention is unwarranted and against all cannons of law guaranteeing freedom of speech and expression as well as the right to life and liberty.
