Indian troops kill 40 people in Manipur today, internet suspended

Imphal, May 28, 2023 (PPI-OT): On the eve of Indian Home Minister and BJP leader Amit Shah visit, Indian troops killed forty pro-independence activists, today, in the distrubed Manipur state of India. The Indian army, paramilitary and Police commandos during violent operations attacked several areas Sekmai, Sugnu, Kumbi, Phayeng and Serou in and around Imphal valley on Sunday. Manipur has been without internet for over 25 days.

The BJP’s Chief Minister N Biren Singh told reporters they have got reports that “40 Insurgents” have been shot dead. The operation was going on in more areas and unclaimed bodies lying on the streets. Doctors at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in state capital Imphal told the media today that they have received 10 people injured in the gunfight at Phayeng.

Khumanthem Kennedy, 27, a farmer, was killed after he was hit by multiple bullets in Bishenpur’s Chandonpokpi; his body is being taken to RIMS, the reports said, adding more casualties are feared. Kennedy is survived by his wife and infant son. The Indian Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to visit Manipur on Monday. The Indian Army Chief General Manoj Pande also visited Manipure on Saturday on a two-day visit.

Since the clashes which began on May 3 while the Rapid Action Force (RAF) and Indian Reserve Battalion (IRBn) dressed in plain clothes, along with one driver on May 26 attacked a meat shop and attempted to set the shop to fire in the New Checkon area in Imphal. The entire incident was captured on CCTV. Pertinenty, the Manipur people are since decades demanding independence and freedom from Indian hegemony.
