Islamabad’s district administration has declared August 13 a public holiday for Independence Day festivities. A notification from the Deputy Commissioner mandates the closure of all public and private establishments in the capital on Wednesday. This declaration sets the stage for a potential four-day weekend in various regions of Pakistan. August 14 is already a national holiday for Independence Day, according to a Cabinet Division announcement. Furthermore, August 15 marks the observance of Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA). While Chehlum isn’t a federally mandated holiday, some provincial administrations, including Rawalpindi and Karachi, designated it as such last year and may repeat this practice. If so, residents in those areas could experience an extended break from August 14 through 17, as Saturday and Sunday are standard weekend holidays.
Considering the holidays and religious commemorations, law enforcement agencies have been directed to enforce stringent protocols to maintain tranquility and public order throughout the nation. Separately, Punjab’s Education Minister, Rana Sikandar Hayat, has prolonged summer recess for educational institutions due to prevailing weather conditions. Public and private schools in Punjab, originally scheduled to reopen on August 14, will now recommence classes on September 1, 2025.
