Judicial remand of Aasiya, aides extended till Sept 7: DeM

New Delhi, August 11, 2018 (PPI-OT): A court in New Delhi has extended the judicial remand of the illegally detained Chairperson of Dukhtaran-e-Millat (DeM), Aasiya Andrabi, and her two associates, Nahida Nasreen and Fehmeeda Sofi, till September 7.

The DeM spokesperson, Rifat Fatima, in a statement issued in Srinagar said that the three leaders, remanded to 24-day judicial custody last month, were supposed to be taken to court for hearing as their remand ended. She said that instead of taking them to the court, the jail authorities at Tihar told them that their hearing would be held via video conferencing. In hearing, she said, the judicial remand was extended till September 7.

Rifat Fatima said that the illegally detained leaders apprised the lady judge about the ill-treatment being meted out to them inside the Tihar jail. “The judge asked the prosecutor to file a report in this regard on August 16. She also took strong note of the intimidation of the women leaders by the jail authorities,” she said.

The DeM spokesperson deplored that the party leaders were being treated as criminals. “They are separately put in confinement. Medicines are denied to ailing Aasiya Andrabi while food, which is of the worst quality, is being provided to them in polythene bags. The food is provided to them through locked iron bar gates and they are not allowed to move out of the solitary confinement. Even medicines prescribed to Aasiya Andrabi are being denied to her,” she added.

Rifat Fatima said, the family of Aasiya Andrabi is completely shattered. “Her children will spend yet another Eid without their parents. It is an ultimate tragedy,” she said. She appealed to the world human rights organizations particularly the Amnesty International to look into the matter and take action in this regard.
