Karachi Port Aims to Attract Global Fleets and Boost Forex with New Bunkering Hub

In a landmark move aimed at capturing a larger share of international maritime trade and bolstering foreign exchange reserves, Pakistan on Tuesday inaugurated its first globally standardized ship-refueling service at Karachi Port.

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry announced the development, stating it fulfills a prime ministerial directive to modernize the nation’s port infrastructure and strengthen its position in the competitive global shipping industry.

The initiative, known as bunkering, involves the fueling of ships and requires strict adherence to international safety, efficiency, and environmental protocols. The minister noted that this regulated facility fills a significant void in Karachi Port’s offerings, positioning it to compete with established regional hubs.

Officials anticipate the availability of dependable, high-standard refueling will attract more international shipping lines to Pakistan’s shores. Chaudhry projected that the resulting increase in vessel traffic would significantly boost revenue through port fees and related economic activities such as repairs, supplies, and maritime logistics.

Furthermore, the expansion of port operations is expected to generate substantial employment opportunities across various segments of the maritime sector.

Chaudhry emphasized that the new service enhances Pakistan’s standing in the global maritime community by demonstrating a commitment to modern and environmentally responsible port management. “Compliance with global standards on fuel quality, documentation, transparency, and safety is essential for building trust among shipowners and international trading companies,” he said.

The initial phase of the operation will commence in partnership with one of the world’s premier energy trading houses, which will carry out refueling using internationally certified procedures.

The venture is poised for expansion as domestic refineries increase their output of globally compliant marine fuels, a development the minister described as a direct benefit to the national exchequer.

The Karachi Port Trust (KPT) had already laid the groundwork for the launch by assessing existing practices, aligning them with international norms, updating documentation, and coordinating with all stakeholders.

This milestone reinforces KPT’s ambition to emerge as a leading regional maritime center and underscores the government’s broader strategy to upgrade the nation’s port capabilities in line with global benchmarks.
