Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab has announced a significant development in the city’s waste management efforts, revealing that 10,000 to 12,000 tons of garbage are now collected daily and transported to landfill sites. This marks a notable improvement in Karachi’s cleanliness since he assumed office, where waste piles were previously prevalent across various areas.
According to a Karachi Metropolitan Corporation statement today, the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) will now assume responsibility for collecting garbage from the Fisheries Harbor area. This agreement, described by Wahab as a constructive step, aims to enhance the sanitation conditions in the fisheries area. The announcement was made during a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony at the KMC Head Office, where SSWMB Managing Director Tariq Nizamani and Karachi Fish Harbor Authority Managing Director Zahid Khemtio formalized the partnership.
During the event, the Mayor highlighted that the agreement, initially set for one year, involves SSWMB handling daily waste collection from a five-kilometer area of the fish harbor. However, the removal of waste from the water and its transportation to collection points will remain under the jurisdiction of the Fish Harbor Authority.
Mayor Wahab assured continued improvements in Karachi’s cleanliness, committing full cooperation to the Karachi Fish Harbor Authority for sanitation endeavors. He directed SSWMB officials to ensure cleanliness across all districts and maintain the daily waste collection process, emphasizing the removal of garbage from both central and suburban areas.
Expressing optimism, Wahab stated that collaborative efforts would drive Karachi’s development forward. Under the Pakistan People’s Party’s vision, ongoing and new development projects are gaining momentum as Karachi moves towards transformation. He confirmed that KMC now has the financial resources to support these initiatives and anticipates timely completion of all projects.
