In an address to the Sindh Assembly, Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, the President of PPP Sindh, voiced opposition to the proposed six canal projects, declaring the party’s firm stance against them.
According to the press release, Khuhro emphasized that the PPP had presented a resolution as a clear expression from the party’s leadership and the people opposing the canals. Khuhro questioned if Sindh was being punished for its role in the formation of Pakistan, highlighting the province’s historical contributions.
Criticizing those who had supported the Kalabagh Dam while in government, Khuhro reminded that the PPP had led a movement against the dam. He also pointed out that under international law, the first right to water should belong to those at the tail-end of the river system, and any deprivation could lead to severe consequences for Pakistan.
Khuhro expressed concern over the flood canal and Chashma-Jhelum link canal being turned into perennial canals without approval from ECNEC or CCI, much like the Cholistan canal’s progression without consent. He applauded the parties, lawyers, and students protesting against the controversial canals, recognizing them as the voice of Sindh.
The PPP leader warned that the canal projects could harm Pakistan and expressed disappointment over GDA’s comments suggesting PPP’s withdrawal from the federation. He recalled past instances, such as the PPP’s efforts against the Kalabagh Dam and the historic resistance faced within the Sindh Assembly.
Khuhro concluded with a firm message that Sindh would not remain silent on injustices, asserting that the water drawn from the Indus River for those canals represented an attack on Sindh.
