Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab called for a new wave of young and dynamic leadership to steer the country towards a brighter future, stating that bold and timely decisions are crucial to achieving meaningful change.
Speaking at the KMC head office during a meeting with a delegation from the 51st Specialized Training Program of the Police Service and the 27th Commander Course, Wahab underscored that a determined youth could reshape the nation’s destiny, according to a KMC statement issued today.
Highlighting ongoing efforts to uplift Karachi, the Mayor pointed to significant improvements in the city’s infrastructure, particularly the enhancement of streetlights, bridges, and flyovers. “The transformation of Karachi is a priority, and through focused efforts, we are seeing tangible results,” he said. He added that the improvement in Karachi Municipal Corporation’s (KMC) tax collection, particularly through K-Electric, is projected to generate over Rs3 billion annually.
Wahab outlined the immediate priorities for Karachi, which include providing clean drinking water and overhauling the city’s sewage system. He assured the delegation that practical steps were being taken to address these challenges.
The rent for KMC’s markets was previously between Rs200 and Rs1,000. When the rent was increased, shopkeepers protested, but the collection rose from Rs80 million to Rs255 million. Currently, Rs82 million are spent monthly on salaries and pensions.
He noted that with the cooperation of the Sindh government, a network of development projects has been established in Karachi, and more development plans will soon be presented to the public, benefiting the common man.
“The Sindh government’s cooperation has been invaluable in realizing a network of development projects across the city. More such projects will be unveiled soon, which will benefit the common man,” Wahab added.
