Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab has revealed that significant measures are underway to address financial liabilities and enhance city operations. The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) is set to pay Rs550 million in dues to 610 pensioners as part of its strategy to clear outstanding liabilities totaling Rs13 billion for retired employees.

According to a statement by KMC today, these announcements were made during a ceremony for distributing pension and arrears checks. Mayor Wahab highlighted that the funds for these payments have been generated from KMC’s own revenue, noting an increase from Rs80 million to Rs250 million. He expressed gratitude to the leadership and Sindh government for their support, emphasizing the commitment to tackle pension payment challenges responsibly.

At the event, Wahab stressed the continuation of the anti-encroachment operation in the city and announced the transition of KMC’s four major hospitals to solar energy. Additionally, he outlined a plan to spend Rs20 million in each union council within the current financial year.

In addressing the issue of unauthorized road digging by Sui Southern Gas Company, the mayor expressed strong reservations and confirmed that letters had been sent to relevant authorities. He also highlighted ongoing projects to address water shortages, including laying a new canal from Hub Dam and initiating water recycling projects.

Mayor Wahab underscored the need for action against legal violations in Karachi and the end of favoritism to enhance institutional efficiency. During the ceremony, checks were distributed to officers and employees by various city officials, marking a significant step in addressing financial challenges faced by KMC.
