In an address to the officers of the Senior Management Course at the National Institute of Public Administration (NIPA) in Karachi, Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab, emphasized the importance of leadership in driving the development of any institution.

According to a KMC statement, he argued that the lack of bold decision-making and innovation in the bureaucracy hinders progress, noting that in the 1990s, Deputy Commissioners had a more proactive approach compared to the current situation. He expressed that while young and determined officers have the potential to transform the country’s future, change will remain elusive unless government officials break free from inertia.

Wahab also shared his personal journey as a young politician, highlighting that expertise in any field requires both education and experience. Reflecting on his own career, he recounted how, after two years of working in a law firm, he took the bold step of establishing his own firm to fully utilize his skills.

He stressed that learning and progress must be ongoing in every field, especially in today’s rapidly changing world. Emphasizing the need for innovation, he urged the officers to align with the times and embrace new ideas to ensure development and prosperity.

Furthermore, the Mayor spoke about his efforts to increase revenue for the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) by initiating private partnerships for tax collection. This move, he noted, was aimed at making KMC more self-sufficient. He also mentioned that the Mayor’s office now oversees the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation and Solid Waste Management, although it does not have control over railways or Port Qasim.

During the event, Dr Syed Saif-ur-Rehman, the Director General of NIPA, welcomed the Mayor, and together, they hoisted the flag and planted a sapling in the NIPA lawn as a symbol of growth and commitment to progress.
