ISLAMABAD:Federal Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb on Tuesday announced abolishing Pakistan Media Development Authority (PMDA) established by PTI government.

Addressing media in Islamabad after taking oath as federal information minister, she said the freedom of expression is the right of every Pakistani, and it will not be curtailed. She said PMDA had been abolished and no parallel authority to Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) would be allowed.

Marriyum said the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) Ordinance 2016 will also be reviewed with all stakeholders. She said that the Islamabad High Court (IHC) had termed PECA Amendment Ordinance unconstitutional due to the efforts of journalists and PML-N as well. She also said they would not take revenge on opponents as their government is not feeling insecure but the rule of law will prevail in the country.

Earlier, Marriyum Aurangzeb took charge as Minister for Information and Broadcasting. Later, on her arrival at the Ministry of Information here in Islamabad on Tuesday, she was warmly welcomed by Information Secretary Shahera Shahid, Director General Radio Pakistan Muhammad Asim Khichi and other senior officials and was briefed regarding the affairs of the Ministry.

Speaking on the occasion, Marriyum Aurangzeb said that the government believes in the freedom of expression and will take all possible steps for the welfare of media houses, organizations and the journalist community.

The Information Minister said the social media will be fully activated to highlight the positive image of the country and those who spread negative propaganda against the state and its institutions will be dealt with iron hands. She said the role of the Ministry is crucial for promotion of important development projects of the government. She said the government will also take all possible steps for promotion of drama and film industry.
