Islamabad, December 18, 2018 (PPI-OT): Senate Standing Committee on Federal Education and Professional Training in its meeting on Tuesday has given a consensus opinion supporting uniform curriculum across the country. The Committee lauded the efforts of Minister for Federal Education and Professional Training in working rigorously on the matter of three different kinds of education systems and even more number of curriculums and holding consultations with all stakeholders at federal and provincial level.
The meeting was held under the Chairmanship of Senator Rahila Magsi and was attended among others by Senators Mushahid Hussain Sayed, Molvi Faiz Muhammad, Nauman Wazir Khattak, Prof. Dr. Mehr Taj Roughani, Syed Muzaffar Hussain Shah, Mian Muhammad Ateeq Shaikh, Samina Saeed, Quratulain Marri, Federal Education and Professional Training Shafqat Mehmood, Secretary Federal Education and Professional Training Arshad Mirza, Executive Director Higher Education Commission Gen. Asghar, and senior officials. The Committee recommended the ‘Islamabad Capital Territory Private Educational Institutions (Registration and Regulation) (Amendment) Bill, 2016’ by Senator Ateeq Shaikh and ‘The trained paramedical staff facility Bill, 2018’ by Senator Quratulain Marri.
The Committee held a detailed discussion on ‘The area study center (Amendment) Bill, 2017’ moved by Senator Muzaffar Hussain Shah. The bill is aimed at making the area study centres affiliated with different universities independent again as they were from 1974 to 2002 when in 2002 they were brought under the universities by an amendment. The bill proposed that the area study centers should be autonomous bodies and should work independently in carrying our research, symposiums, degree awards and foreign policy guidelines to the government. The minister observed that before moving ahead the ministry will conduct a comparative study of the performance of these area centers before and after 2002 and bring the same to the Committee by mid-January.
During discussion on ‘Right to free and compulsory education (Amendment) Bill, 2018’ moved by Senator Samina Saeed relating to better environment for children with Dyslexia, Committee and minister were of the view that this should come as an independent legislation instead of the amendment in the said act and should be an overarching legislation for children having problems in learning, reading, writing or understanding.
The Committee recommended to the ministry and HEC to send a revised summary to the Prime Minister asking for a separate area for establishment of women campus of Kohat university of Sciences and Technology instead of an area adjacent to male campus.
