March 14, 2012

Islamabad: (1) A high level delegation, led by the Secretary Commerce Mr. Zafar Mahmood left for New Zealand to attend the Inaugural Session of Pak-New Zealand Joint Trade Committee (JTC) in Wellington, New Zealand. This JTC was established under a bilateral Trade Agreement signed in 1990. However, it could not hold its first meeting up till now. It is after persistent efforts by the Ministry of Commerce of Pakistan that the Inaugural Session of this Committee has now been scheduled for 15th -16th March, 2012.

In the first meeting both sides will hold discussions to work out arrangements to enhance bilateral trade and identify areas for cooperation, especially in agriculture and dairy sectors. Both sides will also deliberate on ways to establish institutional linkages between the two countries to achieve these objectives.

New Zealand has a strong economy and with a per capita income of US$ 27, 217 per annum, can be a potential market for Pakistani exports. It is hoped that such high level visits will pave way for Pakistani business sector to take benefits of this untapped market.

The marketing strategy for export of Pakistani mangoes in Australia will also be discussed.

Australia has been providing different training and educational opportunities for Pakistani nationals in the recent past. In this meeting also, both sides will discuss the need for developing educational linkages in technical as well as other fields.
