ISLAMABAD:National Assembly on Sunday accepted nomination papers of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif and Shah Mahmood Qureshi of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) for the Prime Minister slot.

Shehbaz and Qureshi will come face to face in the Assembly tomorrow for the election of the new PM. On behalf of PTI, Maleeka Bokhari received nomination papers for the new Prime Minister from the Assembly Secretariat. The decision on the PM candidate from PTI was taken at a meeting of the party leadership core committee chaired by former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Separately, joint opposition nominated Shehbaz Sharif as the Leader of the House. His nomination papers were submitted by an opposition delegation to the National Assembly Secretariat. The delegation included Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Ahsan Iqbal, Naveed Qamar, Khawaja Saad Rafique.

The National Assembly Secretariat has issued a statement regarding the acceptance of nomination papers of Shehbaz Sharif and Shah Mahmood Qureshi for the election of Prime Minister. According to the statement, the nomination papers have been formally scrutinized. After the scrutiny, the nomination papers of both the candidates were accepted.

The National Assembly is scheduled to meet on Monday at 2:00 pm to elect new Prime Minister of Pakistan. The nomination papers for the election of new prime minister could be received by 2:00 am on Sunday, the chairman of the National Assembly panel Ayaz Sadiq.

The Prime Minister Imran Khan was ousted following the success of the no-confidence motion against him. As many as 174 votes were cast in the favour of a no-confidence motion. This is the first time in the history of Pakistan that a no-confidence motion against an elected prime minister has succeeded. Khan served the country as PM for three years, seven months and 22 days.
