National Assembly discusses motorway incident

Islamabad, September 14, 2020 (PPI-OT): The National Assembly is discussing the recent incident of molestation of a woman on the Lahore-Sialkot motorway and other such incidents across Pakistan. Initiating the discussion, Opposition Leader Shahbaz Sharif said incidents of desecration of women are condemnable.

He thanked Almighty Allah for culprit has been arrested, saying those, involved in such horrific and horrendous incidents, should be given exemplary punishments to send a strong message to the criminals and to protect citizens’ lives. The Opposition leader proposed the Speaker to constitute a committee of the House to look into the security lapse on the motorway.

Minister for Communication Murad Saeed said the State take the responsibility that women can continue their education and jobs. He called for collective efforts to give a joint message of protection to women. PPP Leader Qadir Patel also called for exemplary punishment to the accused.

Minister for Human Rights Shireen Mazari said a woman should be respected and given all the due rights entitled to men. She said women are equal citizens and stressed the need to change the mentality of men. She termed the CCPO Lahore’s statement as unacceptable and said more women should be employed in the police force. In his remarks, the chair asked the lawmakers to think about public hanging as no way is left to end such kind of crime.

He said rapists and anti-social elements should be dealt with iron hand. He said stringent laws should be enacted. The National Assembly has passed “The Cooperative Societies (Amendment) Bill, 2020. The House also referred “The Islamabad Capital Territory Waqf Properties Bill 2020” and “the Anti-Money Laundering (Second Amendment) Bill, 2020” to the joint sitting of the Parliament for consideration and passage. The bills referred to the joint sitting were passed by the National Assembly but rejected by the Senate. Advisor on Parliamentary Affairs Babar Awan moved the motions.
