NIA wrongly framing photojournalist as stone-pelter: Family

Srinagar, January 25, 2018 (PPI-OT):In occupied Kashmir, the family of Kamran Yousuf, charged as a stone-pelter by the India’ National Investigation Agency (NIA) has said that if it’s a crime to cover events, then all Kashmiri journalists and photojournalists should be booked for this ‘crime’.

Freelance photojournalist Kamran Yousuf, 23, who was detained by NIA without any charge in September last year, was booked by the agency on January 18, in a fresh chargesheet brought against him in the special court in New Delhi.

The NIA chargesheet accuses Yousuf and another “stone pelter” Javed Ahmad Butt of “forming strategies and action plans to launch protests and communicate the same to the masses in the form of protest calendars released through newspapers, social media and religious leaders in Kashmir.

Yousuf’s family, however, refutes these charges, emphasising that he has been wrongly framed. “These are fabricated charges. Everyone in Kashmir knows that he is a freelance photojournalist for the past five years and not a stone-pelter,” Yousuf’s uncle, Irshad Ahmed, told media.
