The National University of Modern Languages (NUML) came alive with French culture and linguistic flair as its French Department hosted the Fête de la Francophonie in a vibrant event filled with music, performances, and cultural exchange, here on Thursday.

Although Francophonie Day is celebrated worldwide in March, NUML marked the occasion in May with a spirited lineup that included French songs, skits, poetry recitations, and a short film screening. The event provided students an opportunity to showcase their command of the French language while promoting cultural diversity.

Dean Faculty of Languages, Jameel Asghar Jami, opened the event by highlighting the importance of cultural and linguistic inclusivity. ‘All languages deserve equal respect, just as all humans are created equal,’ he stated, commending the department’s efforts in organizing the celebration.

The event was attended by dignitaries including officials from the French Embassy and the Swiss Ambassador to Pakistan, George Steiner. Praising NUML’s dedication to cultural exchange, Ambassador Steiner remarked, ‘Pakistan is a fascinating country for diplomats to live in,’ and advised students to remain humble, forgive easily, and strive for their goals through language learning.

Head of the French Department, Amir Zaheer, described the celebration as a testament to the unifying power of language. ‘Languages serve as bridges between cultures and traditions,’ he said, applauding the dedication of faculty, organizers, and students.

The event concluded with a certificate distribution ceremony for students who passed the internationally recognized A1 and B2 level French language certifications, marking a significant step in their linguistic and academic pursuits.

Through this celebration, NUML reaffirmed its commitment to fostering intercultural dialogue and promoting multilingualism among Pakistani youth.
