With 22 days remaining until Eidul Azha, livestock arrivals at the Maweshi Dost Mandi near the Northern Bypass continue at a steady pace, bringing the total number of animals to over 52,000 since the market became operational on April 17.
The market, a major destination for Eid livestock trading in Karachi, has seen a surge in activity as traders from across Sindh and southern Punjab, including Rahim Yar Khan, Sadiqabad, Naushahro Feroze, Moro, and Hyderabad, have begun arriving in large numbers with animals loaded in trucks and trailers.
Speaking to the media, market administrator Faisal Ali confirmed the opening of General Block 2 to accommodate the increasing number of traders. “In response to the rising influx, we have opened additional space to ensure smooth operations,” he said, adding that special arrangements have been made in VIP, VVIP, and Sapphire blocks, where high-quality animals are already drawing attention from buyers.
The market has also become a focal point for Karachi residents, with its night-time illumination and security arrangements turning it into a local attraction. ‘The Maweshi Dost Mandi has become the centre of attention for Karachiites, especially at night,’ said Faisal Ali.
Traders are reportedly frequenting the Administrator Block to secure preferred plots for their stalls, reflecting growing competition among sellers. The administration has assured visitors and traders of round-the-clock support. ‘We are available day and night to address any complaints,’ said Ali.
The continuous influx of livestock is expected to intensify in the coming days, as demand increases closer to Eid. Market authorities anticipate a further rise in both sellers and buyers, with additional space and services being prepared to manage the peak season crowd.
As the city’s largest cattle market gears up for its busiest period, authorities are focusing on maintaining order, ensuring health checks for animals, and facilitating safe transactions in the lead-up to Eidul Azha.
