Minister for Planning and Development, Ahsan Iqbal, today emphasized Pakistan’s active role in global climate initiatives, highlighting the country’s commitment to international agreements such as the Paris Agreement and its participation in COP meetings including COP29 in Baku Azerbaijan.

Addressing a conference titled “Breathe Pakistan” in Islamabad, Iqbal outlining the nation’s strategies to combat climate change. He reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening national climate adaptation plans and advocating for a fair Loss and Damage Fund to assist vulnerable countries.

The Minister stressed that Pakistan aims to transition from being a victim of climate change to becoming a proactive contributor to global climate solutions. He highlighted the country’s leadership in climate adaptation and water conservation efforts, despite facing significant challenges.

He noted that Pakistan has faced severe climate-induced emergencies, such as floods, heat waves, and droughts, affecting over 40 million citizens in recent years. Despite contributing less than one percent to global greenhouse gas emissions, Pakistan ranks among the top ten most climate-vulnerable nations.

Iqbal also mentioned that the Ministry of Planning is integrating climate resilience into the national development agenda through the 5Es Framework, which encompasses Environment and Climate Change.
