Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif announced that Pakistan will increase its water storage capacity in response to India’s alleged attempts to use water as a weapon.

During a visit to the National Emergencies Operations Center, Sharif cited a recent supplemental order from the Permanent Court of Arbitration, which underscored that India cannot unilaterally suspend the Indus Waters Treaty. He accused India of harboring ‘evil designs’ against Pakistan and seeking to violate the treaty. To counter this perceived threat, the government will expedite non-controversial water storage projects under the Water Accord with the provinces.

Sharif emphasized the critical role of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in these efforts and directed the agency to issue regular weather warnings and disaster alerts via SMS and phone messages, in partnership with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).

Recalling the devastating floods of 2022, the Prime Minister highlighted Pakistan”s vulnerability to natural disasters despite its minimal contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. He noted that Pakistan suffered more than any other nation during the 2022 calamities. Sharif also stressed the need for preparedness in the face of glacial melting caused by heatwaves.

Referring to the recent loss of life in Swat due to glacial melt, Sharif called for a thorough review of the incident and the development of a comprehensive mechanism with provincial governments to prevent future tragedies. He also requested a report on the matter.

Following the 2022 floods, Sharif stated that government ministers secured grants and public-private partnerships to construct more resilient infrastructure. He commended the National Emergencies Operations Center and encouraged authorities to fully utilize this platform for economic and social progress. He pledged full government support for strengthening the institution and its capacity.

The Prime Minister also praised the NDMA for its efficient relief operations in Trkiye and Myanmar, expressing hope that the center”s early warning system is effectively connected with the provinces and providing real-time information.

NDMA Chairman Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik briefed the Prime Minister on the current monsoon season, the flood situation, and the precautionary measures taken.
