Islamabad, April 17, 2019 (PPI-OT): It is the high time for the scholars and educationists to play their role for creating awareness about thalassemia disease among citizens and convince them to donate blood which is the only life line and ray of hope for the survival of patients suffering from this disease, says a press release received here today from Colombo. This was said by the High Commissioner of Pakistan, Maj. Gen. (R) Dr. Shahid Ahmad Hashmat in a ceremony held at the High Commission of Pakistan on April 16, 2019 to hand over donations, including basic amenities worth of SL Rs. 0.7 million to Ragama Adolescent and Adult Thalassemia Care Centre, North Colombo Teaching Hospital.
The High Commissioner said that due to remarkable success in the reduction of childhood mortality by controlling infectious diseases in developing countries, thalassemias are likely to be a major public health concern in the coming decades in South Asia. One of the possible solutions to combat the health hazard is public awareness, he added. The High Commissioner appreciated the efforts of the Centre for its dedication to serve people afflicted with various forms of thalassemia.
