In a significant development at the UN Security Council, Pakistan lauded the ceasefire between the Houthis and the United States as a diplomatic milestone, highlighting the potential for fostering intraYemeni dialogue. Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, emphasized the necessity of utilizing this opportunity to advance an inclusive Yemeni political process.
Ambassador Ahmad, delivering Pakistan’s national statement, reiterated the country’s firm support for resolving the Yemeni crisis through dialogue and diplomacy. He underscored the importance of a Yemeniowned and Yemeniled political process, facilitated by the UN, as the only credible path to lasting peace. Pakistan’s commitment to a peaceful resolution remains steadfast, he conveyed.
During the Security Council briefing, Special Envoy Hans Grundberg, UnderSecretaryGeneral Tom Fletcher, and Ms. Dina El Mamoun provided detailed updates on the Yemen issue. Ambassador Ahmad acknowledged the diplomatic efforts by Saudi Arabia and Oman and urged all parties to honor the December 2023 Roadmap while exercising restraint and prioritizing diplomacy.
In addition to discussing Yemen, Ambassador Ahmad linked ongoing Israeli actions in Gaza to wider regional instability, including tensions in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. He called on the international community and the UN Security Council to stay engaged to prevent further deterioration and aid Yemen in achieving peace, stability, and prosperity.
