The Speaker of the National Assembly, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, emphasized that empowering women is crucial for Pakistan’s progress and prosperity. Highlighting the importance of women’s active participation in all societal aspects, he called for equal opportunities to help women balance professional and personal obligations.
According to a statement by National Assembly of Pakistan, the Speaker acknowledged the significant contributions of Pakistani women in fields like politics, economics, healthcare, education, journalism, defense, technology, and sports. These contributions have played a vital role in enhancing Pakistan’s global standing and shaping its growth. The remarks were made on National Women’s Day, celebrated annually on 12th February.
Sadiq honored the historical contributions of iconic women during the Pakistan Movement, including Fatima Jinnah and Begum Ra’na Liaquat Ali Khan. He commended their leadership and sacrifices, which were pivotal in the independence struggle. He also recognized the roles of women in Pakistan’s democratic stability, highlighting the achievements of figures like Shaheed Benazir Bhutto and Maryam Nawaz.
In his address, the Speaker urged the need for policies that ensure women’s rights, access to education and healthcare, and economic empowerment. He reiterated the importance of equal opportunities for women, citing Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s words on the necessity of women’s partnership for national glory.
The Speaker concluded by reaffirming Parliament’s commitment to effective legislation for women’s rights protection. He highlighted existing laws on inheritance rights and harassment, and noted the establishment of the Women’s Parliamentary Caucus and Gender Mainstreaming Committee as steps towards gender equality.
Deputy Speaker Syed Mir Ghulam Mustafa Shah also addressed National Women’s Day, underlining the importance of overcoming challenges faced by women through collaborative institutional efforts. He emphasized the historic achievement of Benazir Bhutto as a testament to women’s potential in national progress. The Deputy Speaker reiterated the government’s commitment to women’s socio-economic empowerment through tangible actions.
