In a bold move for environmental protection, the Sindh government has announced an immediate and comprehensive ban on the use of plastic shopping bags throughout the province, effective from Monday.

This new regulation is not just an announcement but is reinforced with strict enforcement measures, as stated by the Secretary of Environment, Climate Change, and Coastal Development, Agha Shah Nawaz Khan. Khan has issued a stern warning to manufacturers, suppliers, wholesalers, and retailers, emphasizing that the production, distribution, and use of plastic bags will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Violators of the ban may face severe penalties including fines, arrests, and factory closures. The government has deployed district administrations, police, and special teams to ensure strict compliance, with clear instructions to act without leniency.

Despite previous grace periods, awareness campaigns, and warnings, Khan has declared that tolerance limits have been reached. He reiterated that all individuals involved in the plastic bag business must immediately cease operations or face severe consequences. This measure is a significant step in Sindh’s efforts to combat environmental pollution and promote sustainability.
