Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday urged immediate steps to widen the tax base and instructed authorities to take decisive actions against tax evaders. Chairing a meeting focused on increasing tax revenue, he emphasized the inclusion of individuals and sectors capable of paying taxes within the tax net.

The prime minister underscored the need for strict accountability of those aiding tax evaders, as per a press release from the PM Office. He praised the government’s economic team for progressing towards the Federal Board of Revenue’s (FBR) targets for the fiscal year.

Sharif highlighted the importance of expanding the tax net to alleviate the tax burden on the common man by reducing their tax rates. He set a deadline for completing the digital monitoring of the cement and other sectors by next month. Additionally, he called for accelerated efforts to boost tax revenue from the tobacco sector in partnership with provinces.

The prime minister urged effective pursuit of pending taxrelated cases to recover national funds. He expressed confidence in the country’s economic stability and growth, urging collective efforts for national development.

During the meeting, it was revealed that the full implementation of the Track and Trace System at cement plants nationwide increased tax revenue significantly. This system’s application in the sugar industry led to a 35% revenue increase between November 2024 and April 2025.

The meeting projected that the tax revenue target, equating to 10.6% of GDP, would be met through FBR reforms. Federal Ministers Azam Nazeer Tarar, Muhammad Aurangzeb, Ahad Khan Cheema, Attaullah Tarar, the FBR Chairman, and other senior officials were present.
