KARACHI: Waqar Mehdi of Pakistan People’s Party has been elected senator unopposed on a seat vacated by PPP’s Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar.

Mehdi became senator-elect after MQM-Pakistan withdrew its candidate for the Senate byelection in view of request by PPP leaders, including Sindh Local Government Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, during their visit to MQM-P office in Bahadurabad, yesterday.

PPP’s covering candidate Aajiz Dhamra said that the MQM-P can join Sindh cabinet anytime. The seat became vacant after PPP Senator Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar resigned earlier this month. On November 10, Khokhar, a PPP leader from Punjab, presented his resignation after meeting the Senate chairman.

Memon congratulates Mehdi

Sindh Minister for Information and Transport Sharjeel Inam Memon has congratulated Waqar Mehdi for being elected as Senator unopposed. He also thanked MQM Pakistan for withdrawing its candidates in Mehdi’s support.

In his statement, he said that it was the continuation of the reconciliation policy of President Asif Ali Zardari. “Pakistan People’s Party has majority in Sindh Assembly and Waqar Mehdi could have won easily,” he said, but the vision of the leadership of Pakistan People’s Party was to take everyone together.

The provincial minister said that the Pakistan People’s Party had brought its another political worker to the Upper House of the Parliament today. He called it the victory of Pakistan People’s Party workers. He said that Pakistan People’s Party is a party of workers, laborers and marginalized segment of society.
