ISLAMABAD: President Dr Arif Alvi has approved the appointment of a Senior Advocate of Supreme Court Ashtar Ausaf Ali as Attorney General for Pakistan (AGP).
The President accorded the approval to the appointment on the advice of the Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif under Article 100 (1) of the Constitution. The post of the Attorney General for Pakistan had been lying vacant after Khalid Jawed Khan resigned following the ouster of former Prime Minister Imran Khan via a vote of no-confidence on April 10.
Ashtar Ausaf Ali li had served as Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Law and Justice in 2015-16. He remained Attorney General for Pakistan during the tenure of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in 2016-18. He was Advocate General of Punjab in 1998-99 and 2012-13. In 1999, he had also served as Adviser to the Prime Minister on Human Rights.
